It sure is cold outside! Actually, I think the warmest I’ve felt in the last two months was while drawing these delicious, winter-friendly foods for you to use in your designs. These images were created with a variety of shapes and colors in mind. You can find plenty to do with them, such as making an event flyer or social media post. They include piping hot dishes like soup, coffee, and a savory baked potato. Seasonal favorites like zesty oranges and baby beets are also included.

A blank canvas can be daunting (but don’t worry, we have tips to conquer those fears!). In case you’re feeling stuck, here’s a walkthrough of a basic idea. In this tutorial below, we use Shutterstock’s Create tool to make a hypothetical farmer’s market poster.

Tutorial: How to Design an Event Flyer Using Shutterstock Create
In this quick beginner’s tutorial, we’ll use Shutterstock Create and our free clip art bundle to design a stylish event flyer that advertises a farmers market.
We’ll look at how to add typography, color, and use of space all come together within a design to really make your flyer design stand out!
Step 1
Open the Create tool and select your image size. For this, I’m using the 8.5×11” flyer template. I chose a solid tan color #f2ebdb for the flyer’s background.
Step 2
Click on “Images.” This is located on the left-hand toolbar at the very top. Next, upload all of the images you plan to use for your flyer.
For this example, I chose a variety of the warm winter food illustrations. Each one is high-resolution, and can be used for tiny spaces or large posters. Their transparent backgrounds allow you to place them on any color, pattern, or texture.
Once you’ve uploaded the files, place them in your canvas. Resize and rotate them to fit the space. Here are a couple of design tips:
- Don’t be afraid to place the images so they go off the edge of the canvas. It makes the composition more interesting and suggests that this assortment of food stretches out into infinity.
- Place the foods so that the colors and shapes are distributed evenly. You know how on a map, all of the neighboring countries have different colors? Apply that same idea here.
Step 3
This next step might sound a little funny. Cover the entire canvas with a colored rectangle, by using the “Shapes” menu on the left-hand toolbar. For this poster, I used the mustard yellow color #e0c82c.
Then, use the “Text” menu right above to type and place your text. I wrote the name of the event, along with its location and date, in various fonts.
Step 4
Next, select the rectangle and select “Fade & blend” from the toolbar on the top. Set the Blend Mode to multiply. This allows the image to show through the color. Then set the “Fade” % until both the text and the background images are clear.
You can see how the overlaid shape unifies the color palette and makes everything feel cohesive. You can change the color to shift the tone of the poster, as needed. Unfortunately in this case, the text isn’t quite readable enough. But we can fix that!
Step 5
By using the rectangle tool again, we can put backgrounds behind the text. If you right click on the shapes, you can “Send Backwards.” This ensures that the colored rectangles sit behind the text. You might need to click it multiple times, so the rectangle can work its way back behind multiple other elements. I also rotated the rectangles slightly, so they displayed at differing angles behind each text box.
Step 6
You can also see I’ve layered some steam clip art pieces on top of the foods. This gives the poster more depth. Three images of steam variations can be found within this pack, in case you want your food to be piping hot.
Step 7
Behind the “Winter Market” text, I used a brown rectangle that was colored with the hex code #5e3734. Next, behind the location text, I used a mustard rectangle that is colored #dfc92c. Behind the date, I placed a red rectangle colored #dd403a.
Step 8
And just like that, you have a poster that’s ready to shine through the gray skies and snow mounds! Click the red Download button in the upper right of Create, and you can save a PDF of your flyer.
