The future is now! Come along as Shutterstock brings cutting-edge AI technologies to Austin, Texas.
Technology is rapidly advancing with generative content becoming mainstream faster than we could have imagined. Nowhere was that more evident than at South by Southwest® (SXSW), the annual conference and festivals celebrating the convergence of technology, film, music, education, and culture.
Where creative and tech innovation meet, that’s where you’ll find Shutterstock. As an official presenting sponsor of the Creative Industries Expo at the 2023 SXSW Conference & Festivals, Shutterstock was live in Austin to present and represent the changing face of technology.
Dedicated “to helping creative people achieve their goals,” SXSW—which brings together music and comedy showcases, film screenings, and exhibitions—was the ideal showcase for Shutterstock’s cutting-edge AI technologies.

In the Mix
First stop on the agenda? Guests of SXSW joined Shutterstock at the Digital Media Licensing Association (DMLA) Showcase. As an annual partner of the DMLA, Shutterstock was front and center with a branded lounge, sponsored happy hour, and an interactive demo.
The exhibition—which was an exciting chance for Shutterstock to present thought leadership and the latest news in Generative AI with thousands gathered at the festival—was capped off by Shutterstock’s demo “Photo Credit: AI Model? What’s New in Generative AI.”
Led by Shutterstock’s Vice President of Innovation Solutions Chip Schenck and Vice President of Editorial Candice Murray, this fireside chat addressed questions around Generative AI’s ethics, provenance, ownership, and business models.
Talking the Talk
Building on the growing excitement around Generative AI, Shutterstock led a timely discussion about AI use in business and implications with partners, moderated by Shutterstock Chief Product Officer Meghan Schoen.
Schoen was joined by Jake Kwon, team leader of AI Business Development at LG AI Research, Sarah Hoffman, Vice President of AI and Machine Learning Research at Fidelity Labs, and Frederic Werner, Head of Strategic Engagement at United Nations’ ITU.
Their conversation looked to the future of how businesses and creative teams will use AI to drive real performance.
With two million images generated weekly on Shutterstock’s AI Image Generator, now is an incredibly interesting and pivotal moment for this conversation.
“This is a topic that is getting a lot of buzz right now–and for very good reason. It’s magical,” Schoen opened the panel. “It allows small brands with small budgets to punch above their weight class. Need a high-quality image of an astronaut eating breakfast on Mars? All you have to do is describe it.”
Familiar Faces
With film screenings come the stars. And, naturally, Shutterstock was there to capture them all—with a little help from a friend, photographer Andrew H. Walker.
Presenting the future of film, the 2023 SXSW Film & TV Festival lineup showcased emerging storytellers and cinematic trends on the big screen.
Throughout the festival, Shutterstock’s Portrait Studio was the hottest ticket for top talent, with celebrities like Chloe Bailey, Kaia Gerber, Eric André, Anna Kendrick, Lena Waithe, and Ewan McGregor stopping by IRL.
